On the four major forms of contemporary dance, one could say that:
The Martha Graham technique focuses on the principles of contraction and release, the dynamics of the spiral which creates oppositions and the shift of weight. Such principals, along with dramatic intentions and the importance of focus, will be thoroughly experienced during the floor work which builds strength and flexibility. Exercises standing continue to prepare the body as the same principals are applied further with an emphasis on the sense of space. During the combinations across the floor, the student will be challenged by more complex sequences in which the dramatic value of the movement is as relevant as the proper use of the technique.
Graham started her dance company in 1926 and her school in 1930. Both are still existing and thriving and the oldest contemporary dance company & school in the world.
The Martha Graham technique is considered the base of contemporary dance and many great choreographers have trained with and danced for Graham, before starting their own creations.
On the expressivity and performance qualities in the Martha Graham technique:
Many American actors have trained with Graham and call her the "best acting teacher there was".
The style created by Merce Cunningham focuses on the articulation of the body in space, rhythm and shape and it's choreographic processes often include the principle of 'chance'. Cunningham worked extensively with minimalist composer John Cage. Cunningham was a principal dancer at the Martha Graham Dance Company, before he started his own company.
The style created by Jose Limon explores the use of energy in relation to gravity and working with the weight of the body in terms of fall, rebound, recovery and suspension. Limon danced for choreographers Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman before starting his own company.
Release-style places emphasis on minimising tension in the body in the search for clarity, fluidity and efficient use of energy and breath.
